The Bell in Ticehurst, East Sussex

Extensions to a grade-II listed pub to provide ten new bedrooms, a restaurant in an oak barn and a new kitchen

It is a privilege to have been The Bell’s architect since 2017, working on a number of projects and interventions to help maintain its status as one of the best pubs in the UK. The Bell is a beautiful grade-II listed building with an amazing garden set in the heart of the village conservation area, and most importantly is still used and cherished by the locals.

In 2020 we completed a new extension to the function room to provide a second bar for wedding guests. The extension is clad in copper shingles which are slowly weathering down and now looking very natural in amongst the existing roofscape.

In 2024 we commenced construction of five new bedroom lodges and this will be followed by a further three new bedrooms in the neighbouring building, which is also grade-II listed. A new 40-seat restaurant will be built between the two buildings with a new open kitchen facing towards both the restaurant and the pub garden.

The design is not ours alone, but a close and enjoyable collaboration with the client and owner Richard Upton, designer Rich Brett, and the wider design team. The project will enable The Bell to better accommodate the many weddings that take place every year, provide even more incredible food, and continue to welcome pub drinkers.

The Bell is a beautiful place to go for a meal, to stay for a night or longer, or to get married.
